Step by step: documenting your illustration process

I've always loved discovering how my favourite illustrators get their work done. One of the most satisfying things for me is looking at 'before and after' photos of illustrations. It is a truly inspirational process for any artist.

I don't expect this to help anyone but myself, but I have started a small series of such posts.

Today, I've got this strange princess and her sidekick.

I started out with a rough sketch in pencil and then used promarkers to colour her hair. I have layered 5 colours (although, admitedly, I went over board with the black liner and most of the base layers can't be seen in the final drawing): yellow, orange, red, light brown and dark brown.

Next, I lined all facial features in black  - I chose to do this because the skin tone colour that I use for my drawings smudges any trace of pencil up. Afterwards, I can erase all pencil lines and add the skin tone colour.

In the end, I add all the remaining details, look at the final drawing and immediately hate it :) But guess that's what most illustrators go through anyway!
