Step by step: documenting your illustration process

I've always loved discovering how my favourite illustrators get their work done. One of the most satisfying things for me is looking at 'before and after' photos of illustrations. It is a truly inspirational process for any artist.

I don't expect this to help anyone but myself, but I have started a small series of such posts.

Today, I've got this strange princess and her sidekick.

I started out with a rough sketch in pencil and then used promarkers to colour her hair. I have layered 5 colours (although, admitedly, I went over board with the black liner and most of the base layers can't be seen in the final drawing): yellow, orange, red, light brown and dark brown.

Next, I lined all facial features in black  - I chose to do this because the skin tone colour that I use for my drawings smudges any trace of pencil up. Afterwards, I can erase all pencil lines and add the skin tone colour.

In the end, I add all the remaining details, look at the final drawing and immediately hate it :) But guess that's what most illustrators go through anyway!

Christmas swap - handmade edition

handmade-red-christmas-marbles
Every Christmas I miss home like hell. It's just the smell of the cozonaci and the thought ofsarmale that does it for me.

So for the past 3 years I've participated in this handmade Christmas swap organised by Revista Atelierul. Basically, people are paired up and they exchange Christmas gifts made by themselves. Independent crafters and artists join this initiative every year and I've really grown fond of it.

This year, my swap partner has asked for something red and green. And English tea.

I've crafted a wooden marble Christmas necklace that I've painted red holy on, embelished it with gold acrylic dots and added some green crystals for good measure. It looks a bit vintage and I hope she likes it.

Fa la la la la La la la la!

So the handmade Christmas cards are now done - seemed like a sisyphean job, but here I stand in front of you [insert curtsy] tired but somehow accomplished. Sure, they were not everyone's cup of tea ('Ooooh, how... lovely?!'), but hope they did appreciate the fact that no, this year I did not just go to Marks and Spencer's and bought a batch, signed my name and handed them out.

Anyway - Christmas is almost here and this makes me happy.
